Persuasion, Jane Austen’s last novel, which was published posthumously in 1817, tells about Anne Elliot, a woman born to aristocracy in nineteen-century England, who, after having been persuaded by her “surrogate mother” Lady Russell, ended her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a man with no connections, alliance or fortune, only to see him returning to her life eight years later as a successful naval officer in search of a wife, who still carries with him, the pain over the estrangement all those years ago
